About

CBEDS - Chemical and Biological Engineering Doctoral Symposium is organized by the students of the Doctoral Programme in Chemical and Biological Engineering. It will be hosted as a webinar at Zoom, in three sessions that will take place on the mornings of the 16th, 17th and 18th of September.

On the 16th, the main speakers will present recent advancements and strategies developed for the implementation of a Circular Economy.
On the 17th, several students from the Doctoral Programme will present works developed in the scopus of their PhD theses.
On the 18th, the employability of alumni from the Doctoral Programme will be explored in a round table where several alumni will reflect on the value gained from their PhD.

  • M. Madalena Alves

    M. Madalena Alves @CEB

    Maria Madalena dos Santos Alves is a full professor at Minho University since September 2013. Her research activity focuses on the use of environmental biotechnology tools, in line with circular economy principles. She is the director of the Center of Biological Engineering at the University of Minho, and is responsible for the BRIDGE Group - Bioresources, bioremediation and biorefinery at the Center for Biological Engineering, where she coordinates a multidisciplinary team with 25 researchers. She supervised or co-supervised 24 PhD students with completed exams. She is or was responsible for more than 30 funded R&D projects and is the author of 152 articles published in international magazines with full review and is the author of 2 books in a total of 429 publications. In 2007 she was the founder of a spinoff company at the University of Minho of which she was scientific director until September 2014. Since february 2020 she is member of the Scientific Council of the School of Engineering, University of Minho. She received several awards, including the Lettinga Award 2004 funded by three prestigious dutch companies with a project selected among 60 applications worldwide. In 2005 and in 2006 she received the BES innovation in 2005, and the National Environmental Innovation Award respectively. In September 2009, she was awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa degree by the University of Iasi in Romania. In January 2016 she received the honorary title of Citizen of Merit from the Viana do Castelo City Council where she was born.

  • Lucília Domingues @CEB

    Lucília Domingues is Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Biological Engineering Department at University of Minho, Director of the Master Course on Biotechnology and Associate Director of the research unit CEB - Centre of Biological Engineering from Minho University. Her main research area is Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, in particular, Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology. The research work developed has been driven by the utilization of molecular biotechnological tools for microbial strain development and intensification of bioprocesses with focus on the utilization of renewable substrates and production of metabolites and/or recombinant proteins with applications on the food, energy, chemical and/or biomedical industries. She has been the leader of 7 national/industrial projects, and participated in other 3 international (2 EU) and 12 national projects. At present, she is the Co-PI of 3 FCT projects and 6 multiteam projects related with molecular biotechnology and biorefineries development. She is author/co-author of 2 books, 13 book chapters, 127 papers in peer-reviewed journals (+3000 citations and a H-index of 32 in Scopus).

  • João Nunes @BLC3

    João Nunes is Founder and President of the Association BLC3 of the Campus of Technology and Innovation. He is also Founder and President of the All – Portuguese Association for Bioeconomy and Circular Economy and Member of the Working Group and Monitoring of the Societal Challenge 2, Member of the Consultative Committee of the Integrated Master in Innovation in Culinary Arts of the Estoril Higher Institute for Tourism and Hotel Studies, Member of the advisory board, through the context of the Portuguese member state, of the SCREEN project, co-coordinator of Innovation of the Agenda of I & I for the Circular Economy 2030 project of FCT and Member of the evaluation team of the Participatory Budget Portugal in Science. From 2010 to 2017 he has coordinated 26 R & D projects, in the amount of over 12 million Euros in the areas of Biorefinery, Energy Systems, Industrial Biotechnology, Agrofood, Bioeconomics and Circular Economy, Automation, Renewable Energies, Entrepreneurship and Educational Innovation. He was Researcher from 2004 to 2016 in 4 research centres in projects related to Life Cycle Assessment, Biofuels, Biomass, Environment, Rational Use of Energy, Forest Fires, Electric Mobility, Aquarium Technology and Biotechnology. He has published more than 20 technical-scientific articles and more than 50 oral presentations and posters in the areas of Bio-refineries, Energy, Industrial Biotechnology, Biofuels, Bioeconomics, Circular Economy, Life Cycle Assessment, Biofuels, Biomass, Environment, Rational Energy Use, Forest Fires. He has received 3 awards for recognition of technical-scientific work and 1 of regional work merit. He is also responsible for 3 patents, 1 national, 1 european, and 1 international.

  • Lígia Rodrigues

    Lígia Rodrigues @CEB

    Lígia R. Rodrigues is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at University of Minho, Head of the Department of Biological Engineering and Associate Diretor of the Centre of Biological Engineering. She holds a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering and her research interests comprise Synthetic and Molecular Biology, Bioactive Molecules, Bioprocess Development and Functional Food at or in collaboration with international labs. She is the recipient of several research grants and contract research projects with companies. To date, she published more than 130 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 30 book chapters, edited one book and participated in more than 140 national/international conferences, holding an h-index of 40. She has been involved in the launching of several spin-off companies in the Biotech and Life Sciences fields. She is member of the Scientific Committee of the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking and Vice-Director of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Section of Ordem dos Engenheiros, North Region.

  • Joana Azeredo

    Joana Azeredo @CEB

    Joana Azeredo is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at UMinho and the head of Bacteriophage and Biotechnology Group (BBiG) at CEB. Her research interests focus on the use of bacteriophages for the treatment and control of infectious diseases. During her research career, Joana Azeredo was responsible for several national (8) and EU projects (2) and for the supervision of 16 PhD students. She regularly serves as international expert project reviewer for national and international funding agencies. She has extensive publishing and editorial experience, both as author (+150 international peer reviewed papers), member of editorial boards and editor of thematic issues and books. Her work has received +3000 citations and her current h-index is 37 (Scopus).
